   princess, sister of Napoleon Bonaparte
   Born Marie-Paulette Bonaparte in Ajaccio, Corsica, the daughter of maria letizia ramolino and carlo maria bonaparte, and the younger sister of Napoléon Bonaparte, Pauline Bonaparte married General LECLERC but was widowed in 1802, when her husband died of yellow fever in the course of trying to suppress the rebellion that led to the establishment of independent Haiti (the former French colony of St-Domingue). In 1803 she married prince Camille Borghese and became princess Pauline Borghese. She was soon separated from him, however, and lived independently, much celebrated for her beauty. In 1806, Napoléon made her duchess of Guastalla. Banished from the French imperial court in 1810 because of a dispute with the empress Marie-Louise, Pauline Bonaparte always remained loyal to her brother. she joined him in exile on Elba (1814) and wanted to follow him to Saint Helena. The sculptor Canova produced a famous statue of her as venus victrix.
